Abstract

This research aimed to study the effectiveness of STEM-based inquiry activities to develop the depth of scientific knowledge; Lifelong skills of middle school students and their decision-making ability. To conduct this research, the quasi-experimental with pre-test post-test control group design was used. The sample of the research were selected from the first year middle school students during the second semester of the academic year 2022-2023, N= 185, divided in to two groups: (94) students for the experimental group and (91) students of the control group. The research instruments include the preparation of Teacher's guide and students’ worksheets in light of STEM-based inquiry activities to the Earth and universe unit, a test of the depth of scientific knowledge, the lifelong learning skills scale, as well as the decision-making scale. Firstly, the research instruments were applied at the same time on the two groups. Secondly, the unit prepared was taught to the students of the Exp.G, while the unit itself was taught according to the method used in the school for the Cont.G. Then, the research instruments were applied again at the same time on the two groups. The results of the present research revealed the effectiveness of STEM-based inquiry activities in developing research variables. The research recommended training science teachers to use STEM-based inquiry activities in teaching science, and to pay attention to developing the depth of scientific knowledge; lifelong learning and decision-making skills among students of different educational stages
